Q2: Discussions Over Time

Analyzing Fluctuations in Technology Discourse Over Time

In this section, we explore how technology discussions unfold over time in the r/Technology and r/Futurology subreddits from January 2021 to February 2023. We’ll be looking at four different graphs that show us how the number of submissions and comments changes over this period. These graphs help us spot when discussions are busiest and quietest, and they also help us understand how big events in the tech world influence the amount of discussion happening on these subreddits.

Comments Fluctuations:

Upon exploring the fluctuations in comments on the r/Technology subreddit, we noticed a sharp increase in discussion activity right after OpenAI’s release of their research on InstructGPT models on January 27, 2022. However, this surge was short-lived, and discussion levels quickly returned to normal. We also observed another peak in comments around May 2022, indicating a period of heightened engagement.

Surprisingly, the introduction of ChatGPT and ChatGPT Plus on November 30, 2022, and February 1, 2023, respectively, didn’t cause significant changes in comment activity. It’s worth noting, though, that the decrease in discussion volume after February 1, 2023, might be due to limitations in the data we collected. The dataset might not accurately capture the latest activity, leading to this apparent decrease.

Submission Fluctuations:

Analyzing the ups and downs in submissions reveals an interesting trend. From January to April 2021, there’s a huge spike in discussion activity, which then levels off gradually. Even though we see some spikes again in September 2021, December 2022, and February 2023, overall, the amount of discussion is lower compared to the big surge in early 2021. This indicates a change in how submissions happen over time, with occasional peaks happening amidst an overall decrease in discussion activity.

Comments Fluctuations:

In r/Futurology, the discussion patterns differ from those in r/Technology. After key events involving OpenAI, such as the launch of ChatGPT, there’s a noticeable surge in the number of comments. This trend is especially prominent after November 2022. We see spikes in discussion activity that align with these events, peaking between November 2022 and February 2023. These findings indicate a clear connection between OpenAI’s advancements and increased engagement within the r/Futurology community.

Submission Fluctuations:

In the same vein, we noticed that the ups and downs in submission activity closely match those in comments, suggesting a spike in discussions after ChatGPT was introduced. Specifically, events in November 2022 and February 2023 caused a big jump in submission activity, reaching its highest point during these times. This highlights how ChatGPT has greatly influenced sparking conversations and interactions among members of the r/Futurology community.

In conclusion, our analysis uncovered interesting patterns in how discussion volumes change over time in both r/Technology and r/Futurology, especially when significant tech events, like advancements from OpenAI, occur. These findings give us a better understanding of how technology-related conversations evolve on Reddit, showing us how new technologies play a key role in driving discussions and engaging the community online.
